We solve CO₂ problem with 200 million years of experience

About Us

Carbon-Alert solves CO₂ problem with 200 million years of experience. The Dutch company Carbon-Alert is working in Colombia to solve the global CO₂ problem by artificially forming peat. With a new plant species, the process that is already happening in the Earth can be extremely accelerated, leading to millions of tons of CO₂ storage underground. And that could potentially offset all emissions. A long-awaited solution that must be quickly embraced worldwide to combat global warming.

Our Story

Jacobus Van Merksteijn is an innovative Dutch engineer and businessman from a 2nd generation engineering and entrepreneurial family who embarked on a mission to contribute climate change. Since around the year 2000, Van Merksteijn began to take a keen interest in mitigating emissions and removing CO₂ from the atmosphere finding novel ways to do it.

His deep sense of purpose and commitment to leaving a positive legacy led him to create a climate technology company focused on carbon capture and removal.

He’s been developing innovative solutions that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the technology involves a novel approach to capturing CO₂ and storing it safely underground, preventing it from contributing to climate change.

How does it work?

Carbon-Alert uses a C4 plant species. This plant, also called giant grass, comes from the African tropics and was modified in China. It grows very quickly under warm conditions, up to 5 meters in 2 months. More importantly, it absorbed an extremely large amount of CO₂. CO₂ that Carbon-Alert stores underground. The company partially liquefies the plant and injects it under the groundwater. The result? Almost all the CO₂ that the plant took out of the air disappears into the ground and never comes out again. An accelerated form of peat formation, as the Earth has been doing for more than 200 million years.

Tropical innovation

Carbon-Alert starts its project with 4000 hectares of land in Colombia. Trees would be planted at this location, which in the long term would store about 0.5 to 1 ton of root carbon in the soil. However, the giant grass absorbs about 200 to 300 times more CO₂. The plant can also be placed anywhere in the world.

The plant does not carry seeds and is therefore not invasive. One important condition: that plant needs a night temperature above 20 degrees Celsius. That makes it a hugely innovative opportunity for tropical areas.

What's in it for you?

Carbon-Alert calculated that with a 1 million km² we can compensate the entire global CO₂ emissions. An area of 1000 by 1000 kilometers, the same size as half of Europe. A huge surface area, but also a natural alternative to all solar panels, windmills and electric cars in the world. The process provides CO₂ storage, but can also serve to make desert areas fertile, biomass production, bioethanol production, green plastic production and the compensation of oil, coal and gas.

CO₂ certificates

The injected CO₂ is seen as a so-called CO₂ SINK. This can be converted into Certificates via the CO₂ Exchange. These can be purchased by companies to offset their emissions. By converting the storage of the giant grass in the tropical areas into certificates, we are able to really convert these amounts valuable CO₂ reduction. Revenues for governments, and opportunities for business.

About the Project

Carbon-Alert is an organization with its roots in Overijssel, The Netherlands. The company was founded by entrepreneur Jacobus van Merksteijn and aims to effectively tackle the climate problem worldwide by using the power of nature. Together with partners such as All-Plants, Twente University, SMART Automation, Krone agricultural technology and several investors, we are working towards realization of the first project. The entire process is carried out according to internationally recognized standards and checked and certified by external organizations such as Loyds and Veritas.
